Dr. Balhara is an assistant professor and assistant residency program director in Emergency Medicine (EM) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also co-directs the Health Humanities at Hopkins EM initiative.
After receiving her undergraduate degree in French at Rice University, she obtained a Master's degree in French Cultural Studies from Columbia University. She subsequently obtained her medical degree and completed residency training in EM at Johns Hopkins, where she served as chief resident. She was an assistant residency program director at the University of Texas Health in San Antonio before returning to Hopkins. Her academic interests focus on medical education, the health humanities as applied to residency training and to patient care in the emergency department, and social determinants of health. She has developed and taught multiple arts- and literature-based courses for medical students, interprofessional learners, and residents, and is involved in institution-wide humanities initiatives at Johns Hopkins.
